Crete on Moderate-High Alert as Wildfire Risk Soars

Sunday, 14 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete has been placed in fire danger category 2 (moderate-high risk) by Greece's Civil Protection agency for Monday, June 16. This classification means conditions are favorable for wildfires to spread quickly, typically due to dry vegetation, low humidity, and wind. Tourists hiking, visiting nature sites, or traveling through rural and forested areas should take extra precautions. Open flames, barbecues, and smoking outdoors in natural areas are prohibited under Greek law during elevated fire danger periods. If you notice smoke or fire, call the emergency number 199 (Fire Service) immediately. Stick to established trails, avoid remote areas during peak afternoon heat, and stay informed through local news or your accommodation. Authorities may restrict access to certain natural areas at short notice.
