Gaza-bound flotilla diverts to Crete; 36 activists hospitalized

Friday, 1 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A pro-Gaza activist flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, made an unplanned stop in Crete after 176 activists on board required assistance. Thirty-six of them were taken to hospital for medical evaluation. The Greek Foreign Ministry issued an official statement regarding the incident, as did the organising group March To Gaza. The flotilla was part of an international effort to reach Gaza by sea. The situation was handled by Greek authorities and local emergency services. There are no reported implications for tourists visiting Crete at this time, though visitors near Heraklion port may notice an increased official presence. The incident reflects broader international tensions around the Gaza conflict, which have on occasion affected maritime routes in the eastern Mediterranean.
