Back to newsSnow fell across several mountainous regions of Greece in early May 2026, including the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and other highland areas of Crete, in an unusually cold and wintry spell for the season. While coastal and low-lying areas of the island remain unaffected, visitors planning hikes or drives to mountain villages should expect cold temperatures, possible road closures, and wet conditions at altitude. Pack extra layers if heading inland or to higher elevations. Beach destinations along the north and south coasts are not impacted. Check local road conditions before driving mountain routes such as those toward the Samaria Gorge area, as some access roads may be temporarily affected by the cold snap.
