Tourist Rescued from Richtis Gorge After Getting Stranded in Crete

Thursday, 30 April 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A rescue operation was carried out at Richtis Gorge, near Sitia in eastern Crete, after a 58-year-old foreign tourist became stranded and unable to continue on her own. Emergency teams coordinated a response that included setting up a rope system to safely extract her from the gorge. She was recovered without serious injury. Richtis Gorge is a popular hiking destination known for its lush vegetation and waterfall, but the terrain can be demanding, particularly for less experienced hikers. Visitors planning to hike the gorge should wear appropriate footwear, carry sufficient water, and ideally hike in groups or inform someone of their route. Starting early in the day is advisable, especially in warmer months. Local emergency services in the Sitia area are equipped for gorge rescues, but prevention remains the best approach.
