Back to newsChrysi Island (also known as Gaidouronisi), the small uninhabited island located about 15 kilometers south of Ierapetra in eastern Crete, is showing strong signs of ecological recovery, according to an on-site inspection carried out by the Decentralized Administration of Crete. The assessment found that the island's fragile ecosystem, which includes one of the largest natural cedar forests in the Mediterranean and protected sandy beaches, is regenerating after years of environmental stress from tourism pressure and past damage. Chrysi is a popular day-trip destination accessible by boat from Ierapetra. Visitors are reminded that the island is a protected nature reserve: camping, lighting fires, and removing any natural materials including shells and sand are strictly prohibited. Respecting these rules helps sustain the ecosystem recovery that authorities are now documenting.
