Back to newsThe Panhellenic Federation of Cultural Cretan Associations is marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete with a commemorative event held in Athens. The Battle of Crete took place in May 1941, when Allied and Cretan forces resisted a major German airborne invasion for ten days before the island fell. It remains one of the most significant events in Cretan history, and the fierce resistance of local civilians is deeply woven into Cretan identity. Visitors to Crete can explore this history at the Battle of Crete Museum in Heraklion and at numerous memorials and cemeteries across the island, including the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda Bay near Chania. The anniversary is commemorated each year around May 20-31, with local ceremonies, parades, and cultural events that tourists are welcome to attend.
