Crete Warned of Possible 4.7 Magnitude Aftershocks; Buildings Safe

Friday, 24 April 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Seismologist Vasilis Karastathis has stated that aftershocks of up to 4.7 magnitude on the Richter scale are possible following recent seismic activity in Crete. While this level of aftershock may be felt, it is generally not considered dangerous for well-constructed buildings and infrastructure. Crete sits in one of Europe's most seismically active zones, and minor tremors are a normal part of life on the island. Tourists should remain calm if they feel light shaking, move away from windows and unsecured objects, and follow guidance from local authorities or hotel staff. There is currently no indication of risk to major tourist sites, beaches, or transport links. Visitors are advised to stay informed through official Greek civil protection channels and to keep emergency contact numbers for their accommodation on hand.
