Back to newsGreek construction giant GEK TERNA has placed Crete at the center of several billion-euro infrastructure investments. The three main projects are the BOAK, the east-west highway currently under construction across the island that will significantly reduce travel times between major destinations; the new Kastelli International Airport near Heraklion, expected to open around 2028 with a capacity of up to 18 million passengers per year; and a major water infrastructure initiative to address the island's seasonal supply challenges. For visitors, the BOAK highway will make road trips across Crete faster and more comfortable once completed. The future Kastelli airport will replace the existing Heraklion airport and is expected to expand flight connections and ease congestion during peak summer season.
