Rare Alpine Weather Hits Crete: Snow in Mountains, Hail on Coasts

Sunday, 3 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete experienced an unusual alpine-style weather event, with heavy snowfall recorded in the mountain village of Anogia and hail falling in Heraklion, including in coastal areas near the sea. The conditions created striking winter scenery rarely associated with the island. Tourists visiting the island during this period should be prepared for cold and wet weather, especially at higher elevations. Mountain roads, including routes toward the Psiloritis massif, may be slippery or temporarily inaccessible. If you are planning day trips inland or to villages like Anogia, check road conditions before departure and carry warm layers. Coastal areas around Heraklion may also see brief but intense hail showers. The weather is expected to be temporary, typical of late-season Mediterranean cold fronts affecting the island in spring.
