Crete has been awarded 154 Blue Flag certifications for 2026, the highest number of any region in Greece and among the top in Europe. The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized eco-label granted to beaches meeting strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, and visitor services. Awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the flags are displayed at certified beaches throughout the summer season. For visitors, Blue Flag beaches offer reliable water cleanliness, lifeguard presence, accessible facilities, and clear information signage. Certified beaches are spread across all four regional units of Crete, including popular areas in Heraklion, Lasithi, Rethymno, and Chania. Travelers can identify certified beaches by the blue and white flag displayed at the entrance. A full list of awarded beaches is published each year on the official Blue Flag website.
