Back to newsSnow has fallen on Mount Psiloritis (Ida), Crete's highest peak at 2,456 meters, in early May 2026, an unusual but not unheard-of late-season weather event. The mountain's upper slopes are currently covered in snow, creating a striking visual contrast against the spring landscape below. Tourists visiting the Rethymno or Heraklion regions may notice snow-capped peaks from the coast. If you plan to hike toward the summit or the Nida Plateau, check conditions before departing as mountain roads can be slippery and temperatures at altitude will be significantly colder than at sea level. Light layers are not sufficient; bring warm clothing for any mountain excursion. The phenomenon is temporary and lower elevations across the island remain warm and accessible for normal sightseeing and beach activities.
