Back to newsAuthorities are warning about an active phone scam targeting parents of students currently on a five-day school trip to Crete with the General High School of Aegina. Scammers are calling parents and falsely claiming their child has been involved in an accident during the trip. The school and local authorities have confirmed the children are safe and no accident has occurred.
This type of scam, sometimes called a "virtual kidnapping" or emergency fraud, is not limited to school groups. Tourists visiting Crete with family or friends should be aware that if you receive an unexpected distress call about a loved one in Greece, verify directly with the person or their travel companions before taking any action or sending money. Contact local police (dial 100) or your embassy if you suspect fraud.
