Back to newsGreece has introduced strict regulations banning sun loungers and beach umbrellas at 251 designated beaches across the country, effective immediately. These are protected coastal zones where commercial beach equipment is prohibited by law to preserve natural habitats and ensure free public access to the shoreline. The rule applies to beaches classified as environmentally sensitive or those where operators previously set up furniture without proper permits. Tourists visiting these beaches should bring their own towels and portable shade solutions, as rental equipment will not be available on-site. Fines can be issued to vendors operating illegally in these zones. Visitors planning a beach day in Crete are advised to check in advance whether their chosen beach is among the restricted sites, particularly in popular areas where overcrowding and unlicensed vendors have been a recurring issue in recent summers.
