Soaring Rents Drive Greeks Out as Tourism Rentals Boom

Sunday, 10 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Greece is experiencing one of the highest rates of housing cost overburden in the European Union, with rents in many areas consuming a significant portion of the average monthly wage. In Crete, as in other popular destinations, the surge in short-term holiday rentals has reduced the supply of long-term housing, pushing local residents toward financial strain. For tourists, the practical effect is visible in rising accommodation prices across the island, particularly in sought-after areas such as Heraklion, Chania, and Agios Nikolaos. Booking well in advance remains advisable, especially for summer travel between June and September. Visitors may also find better value by considering smaller inland villages or less central locations, where prices are more moderate while still offering easy access to beaches and historical sites.
