Lufthansa Cuts 20,000 Short-Haul Flights by October 2026

Lufthansa is cutting 20,000 short-haul flights from its schedule by October 2026, targeting routes deemed unprofitable. The move is expected to save around 40,000 tonnes of jet fuel as the airline restructures its network. Travelers flying to Crete with Lufthansa or its partner airlines should check their bookings, particularly those with connecting flights through Frankfurt or Munich on thinner European routes. Direct flights to Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) from major hubs are less likely to be affected, but feeder connections from smaller German and European cities may see reduced frequency or cancellations. Passengers are advised to confirm their itineraries directly with Lufthansa and consider booking alternative carriers or routing through Athens if their connection is discontinued.
