Insect Population Surge Prompts Kladisos River Alert

Wednesday, 13 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Visitors to the Kladisos river area in Chania should be aware of a currently elevated insect population in that zone. Local authorities have noted a higher-than-usual concentration of insects that are being mistaken for mosquitoes. While the exact species has not been specified, the presence is considered localised to the riverbank area. If you are planning to walk along the Kladisos river or visit nearby green spaces, it is advisable to wear long sleeves and trousers during dawn and dusk hours, apply insect repellent, and avoid standing near still or slow-moving water. This type of seasonal insect activity is common in riverside areas of Crete during warmer months. The situation does not affect central Chania or beaches, and no health risk has been officially declared.
