Greece clears monitored passenger of hantavirus

Monday, 11 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Greek health authorities have confirmed that a 70-year-old Greek passenger who was monitored following potential exposure to hantavirus does not have the disease. The president of EODY, Greece's national public health organization, stated the individual "has not the slightest symptom" and was simply identified as a contact of a confirmed case. EODY described the precautionary measures applied as "disproportionately strict" relative to the actual risk level. Hantavirus is a rare viral disease typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, not through person-to-person contact. There is currently no indication of any outbreak or elevated risk in Crete or elsewhere in Greece. Tourists visiting the island do not need to take any special precautions beyond standard hygiene practices already recommended during travel.
