Chania builds earthquake shelter at historic Eastern Walls

Tuesday, 28 April 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The municipality of Chania, in western Crete, is developing a public refuge area at the Eastern Walls (Anatolika Teihi) designed to shelter residents and visitors in the event of an earthquake. The project is part of civil emergency preparedness efforts and is expected to take 36 months to complete from the date the contract is signed. The Eastern Walls are located in the historic old town area of Chania, a popular destination for tourists. While construction is underway, visitors to the area should be aware of potential works in or near this historic zone. Crete is situated in a seismically active region, so knowing the location of designated safe gathering points is practical information for anyone spending extended time on the island.
