Cretan Cheeses Shine at Brussels AREPO Regional Products Event

Saturday, 2 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Cretan cheeses took center stage at the 6th European Regional Origin Products event (AREPO) in Brussels, where the Region of Crete held a dedicated pavilion. Three traditional cheeses proved especially popular with attendees: graviera, a hard, nutty cheese with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status; xinomyzithra, a tangy soft cheese; and pichtogalo, a creamy spreadable variety native to Crete. The strong international interest highlights the growing reputation of Cretan dairy products beyond Greece. For visitors to Crete, all three cheeses are widely available at local markets, delicatessens, and village shops across the island. Graviera is produced primarily in Rethymno and Heraklion, while pichtogalo is a specialty of the Chania region. Trying these cheeses locally is one of the most authentic food experiences the island offers.
