Greek Health Authorities Warn of Dangerous Sunscreen Myths

Sunday, 10 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Greek health authorities are warning against common sunscreen myths that put beach visitors at risk. One of the most dangerous misconceptions is that a tan provides sufficient protection against UV rays. In fact, a single severe sunburn in childhood doubles the lifetime risk of melanoma. Research also shows men are more vulnerable than women to sun-related skin damage. Other widespread myths include the belief that sunscreen is unnecessary on cloudy days or in the water. For tourists visiting Crete, where summer UV indexes regularly reach extreme levels, dermatologists recommend applying SPF 30 or higher every two hours, regardless of skin tone or prior tanning. Reapplication after swimming is essential. Seek shade between 11am and 4pm, when UV radiation peaks. These precautions apply to all skin types throughout the entire season, not only on visibly sunny days.
