Chania Honors WWII Fallen in Annual Memorial Ceremony

Monday, 27 April 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
A memorial ceremony was held in Chania to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II, with a commemorative prayer service at the Monument of the Fallen. Chania has deep ties to WWII history, having been the site of the Battle of Crete in May 1941, one of the largest airborne operations of the war. The Monument of the Fallen honors Greek soldiers and civilians who died during the occupation. Visitors to Chania can explore this history further at the Municipal Market area and the nearby War Museum. The German War Cemetery at Maleme, about 16 km west of Chania, is also open to visitors and offers a sobering reflection on the battle's scale. Entry is free.
