The Monument of the Fallen honors Greek soldiers and civilians who died during the occupation. Visitors to Chania can explore this history further at the Municipal Market area and the nearby War Museum. The German War Cemetery at Maleme, about 16 km west of Chania, is also open to visitors and offers a sobering reflection on the battle's scale. Entry is free.
