These actions can trigger a spark and ignite the gas. Instead, leave the building immediately without using the elevator, leave doors open as you exit to help ventilate the space, and once outside call the emergency gas line or the fire service at 199. Do not re-enter the building until authorities confirm it is safe. Tourists staying in apartments or villas in Crete should locate the gas shutoff valve on arrival and ensure they know the quickest exit route from their property.
