Back to newsOn June 2, 2026, officials signed a cooperation agreement between the Organization for the Development of Crete (OAK) and the Local Land Improvement Organization of the Lassithi Plateau, advancing plans for a new water reservoir at Chavgas on the Lassithi Plateau in the Lasithi regional unit.
The Lassithi Plateau, located in eastern Crete at around 840 meters elevation, is a popular day-trip destination known for its windmills, traditional villages, and the Dikteon Cave, legendary birthplace of Zeus. The reservoir project aims to improve water management for the area's agricultural land.
No immediate disruption to visitor access is expected. Tourists planning to visit the plateau can continue to do so via the main road from Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos, with the scenic drive itself being a highlight of the journey.
