Back to newsA Cretan man named Theocharis Athitakis has set out on a remarkable 153-kilometer walk across Crete, traveling from the Sfakia region in the south to Heraklion in the north. Carrying only a traditional shepherd's walking stick and a bottle of water, he began his journey from Krapi Askyfou, a village in the Askyfou plateau area of Chania prefecture, with his destination being Daskalogianni Square in Heraklion city center. The route crosses some of Crete's most dramatic mountain terrain, passing through the White Mountains region. This kind of long-distance walking reflects a deep Cretan tradition of traversing the island on foot. Visitors interested in hiking in Crete can explore many of the same landscapes through established trails in the Sfakia area and the Askyfou plateau, which are accessible from Chania.
