Back to newsA recent study by the National Technical University of Athens found that one in four fuel stations in Greece is delivering less fuel than the pump displays, costing drivers an estimated 400 million euros per year nationwide. The Greek Petroleum Companies Association is calling for stricter legislation to hold fuel distributors more accountable alongside station operators.
For tourists renting cars or motorbikes in Crete, this is worth keeping in mind. When filling up, watch the pump display reset to zero before fueling and note the liter count delivered. Paying by card creates a paper record. Established stations at major towns and airports tend to have more regulatory oversight. If you suspect a short delivery, you can report it to the Greek Consumer Ombudsman or local authorities. The issue affects mainland Greece and the islands alike.
