Back to newsGreece's Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis officially inaugurated a new Police Sub-Directorate in the Messara region of southern Crete. The ceremony marked the establishment of a dedicated law enforcement unit for the Messara plain, an area that includes popular tourist destinations such as Matala, the Phaistos archaeological site, and the coastal villages along the Libyan Sea.
During the event, the Minister addressed concerns about public safety in Crete and responded to what officials described as unfair negative portrayals of the island in some media coverage. Authorities emphasized that Crete remains a safe destination for visitors.
For tourists, the new sub-directorate means a stronger local police presence in the Messara area. The non-emergency police contact number in Greece is 100, and tourist police can be reached at 171.
