Back to newsTwo minor earthquakes struck Crete in the early morning hours, with a 3.7 magnitude tremor recorded near Lasithi in the eastern part of the island and a 3.8 magnitude tremor near Chania in the west. Both events occurred close together in time during the predawn hours.
Earthquakes of this size are common in Crete and the broader eastern Mediterranean region, which sits on an active seismic zone. Tremors below magnitude 4.0 rarely cause structural damage and are often not felt by people who are asleep. No reports of damage or injuries have been issued.
Tourists staying in the affected areas need not be alarmed. Standard precautions apply: if you feel shaking, stay calm, move away from windows, and follow guidance from local authorities or hotel staff if tremors intensify.
