Back to newsA rescue operation was carried out in the Pachnes area of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in the Sfakia region of Crete, after a hiker sustained injuries on the trail. Firefighters and volunteers were rapidly mobilized to evacuate the injured person from the remote mountain terrain.
Pachnes is the highest peak in the White Mountains and a popular destination for experienced trekkers. The area is rugged and remote, making rescue operations challenging and time-consuming.
Tourists planning to hike in the Sfakia highlands or the White Mountains should carry sufficient water and food, wear appropriate footwear, and inform someone of their planned route and expected return time. A fully charged phone and a basic first aid kit are strongly recommended. Conditions can change quickly at altitude, even in summer.
