Back to newsThe municipal water and sewage authority of Chania (ΔΕΥΑΧ) has issued a public warning about the city's sewage network, which is at risk of collapse due to residents and visitors flushing wet wipes and disposing of cooking fats down drains. The authority is considering fines to enforce proper waste disposal and raise awareness of the growing problem.
For tourists staying in Chania, this is a practical reminder: do not flush wet wipes, baby wipes, or any non-toilet paper products down the toilet. Dispose of them in the bin provided in your accommodation. Cooking grease should go in the trash, not the sink.
Chania's sewer infrastructure, like much of Crete, is not designed to handle these materials. Ignoring this can contribute to blockages affecting entire neighborhoods and local beaches.
