Back to newsAgiofarago Beach, located on the southern coast of Crete near Matala, is gaining recognition as a top destination for adventure tourism. Access requires a 20-30 minute hike through the Agiofarago Gorge, a narrow canyon flanked by towering limestone cliffs and small chapels carved into the rock. The trail is well-marked but involves uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. At the end of the gorge, hikers arrive at a secluded beach with clear turquoise water and no road access, keeping crowds low and the landscape unspoiled. There are no facilities on the beach, so visitors should bring water, food, and sun protection. The site is best visited between April and October. It is accessible from Matala, which is roughly 75 kilometers southwest of Heraklion.
