Greeks Celebrate Name Days for Saints Glykeria and Sergios

Wednesday, 13 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
May 13 is the feast day of Saint Glykeria the Martyr and Saint Sergios the Confessor in the Greek Orthodox calendar. Across Crete and Greece, anyone named Glykeria, Glykeros, Sergios, or Sergia celebrates their name day today. Name days are widely observed in Greek culture, often more so than birthdays, with friends and family gathering to offer wishes and small gifts. If you meet a local with one of these names, a simple "Chronia Polla" (many years) is the traditional greeting and will be warmly appreciated. You may also notice small celebrations in kafeneions or homes. This is a good opportunity for visitors to experience everyday Greek social customs firsthand.
