BOAK Highway Bypasses Expected by Summer, Says Minister

Monday, 20 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greece's Minister of Infrastructure visited the BOAK highway construction site near Mournies, Chania, on Monday morning. The BOAK is a major east-west motorway currently being built across Crete, connecting the island's main cities. The minister confirmed that bypasses around the larger urban centres are expected to be completed by summer. For visitors driving across Crete, this is relevant news: once finished, these bypasses will significantly reduce travel times between Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion by avoiding city-centre traffic. Construction is ongoing in several areas, so drivers should expect occasional delays and lane restrictions near Mournies and other active worksites when travelling along the northern coastal road. Checking local traffic conditions before long drives across the island is advisable during this period.
