Back to newsConstruction of Crete's new Kastelli International Airport continues to move forward, with a key milestone expected in early May 2026. According to Greece's Minister of Infrastructure, speaking in Heraklion, a short extension has been granted for bids on the airport's air navigation systems, with the tender decision now due in the first weeks of May.
Kastelli Airport, located east of Heraklion, is designed to replace the current Nikos Kazantzakis Airport and will handle up to 18 million passengers per year upon completion. The project remains on track, with this procurement step covering critical flight management infrastructure.
For travelers planning future trips to Crete, the new airport will significantly improve capacity, reduce congestion, and expand direct route options. The projected opening remains 2028. No changes affect current flights operating through Heraklion's existing airport.
