The council aims to consolidate municipal water utilities into larger, better-resourced organisations with stronger technical capacity. For visitors, this signals that Crete is taking water scarcity seriously, particularly during peak summer months when demand is highest. Tourists are encouraged to use water responsibly throughout their stay, as many parts of the island rely on limited groundwater reserves. Hotels and rental properties may increasingly apply conservation measures such as restricted pool refilling or reduced towel washing frequency during the high season.
