Back to newsCrete's Decentralized Administration has officially designated 192 water quality monitoring points across the island for the 2026 swimming season. These checkpoints cover beaches and coastal swimming areas throughout the region, where water samples will be regularly tested to ensure compliance with EU bathing water standards. The monitoring program runs throughout the summer season and results are used to classify beaches as excellent, good, sufficient, or poor quality. Tourists can check the official bathing water quality status of specific beaches before swimming, either through the Greek Ministry of Environment website or the European Environment Agency's Swimfo platform. Beaches displaying a Blue Flag or official quality rating sign have passed these assessments. Visitors are advised to look for posted water quality notices at beach access points, particularly after heavy rainfall, when temporary advisories may be issued at certain locations.
