Greece fuel prices surge as petrol nears 2.15 euros per litre

Friday, 15 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Fuel prices across Greece, including Crete, are rising. Petrol is expected to reach around 2.15 euros per litre in the coming months, with diesel following a similar upward trend. Prices below 2 euros per litre are no longer expected in the near term. For tourists renting a car or scooter to explore the island, this is worth factoring into your budget. A typical compact car rental covering 200-300 km per week could cost 20-30 euros more in fuel than earlier this season. Diesel vehicles will also see higher running costs. Prices vary slightly between stations, with rural and coastal areas on the south coast generally more expensive than Heraklion, Chania, or Rethymno. Filling up in larger towns before heading into the mountains or remote areas remains the most cost-effective approach.
