Record March Rainfall Floods Crete, Threatening Spring Water Safety

Sunday, 19 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Crete experienced exceptionally high rainfall throughout March 2026, with precipitation levels well above seasonal averages across all four regional units of the island (Heraklion, Lasithi, Rethymno, and Chania). Data from meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens recorded the highest totals in mountainous and western areas, where some stations logged record monthly figures. For visitors planning spring travel, this means rivers and gorges may still carry elevated water levels into April and May, affecting hikes such as Samaria Gorge, which typically opens in mid-April. Road surfaces on mountain routes can remain slippery or partially damaged after heavy rain. On the positive side, the wet winter has left the island unusually green, with wildflowers expected to peak through May. Always check trail and road conditions locally before setting out on inland excursions.
