Back to newsStarting May 4, Venizeleio General Hospital in Heraklion is changing how it handles emergency room patients. Instead of treating people in the order they arrive, the hospital will now prioritize cases based on medical severity. This triage-based system is standard practice in most European hospitals and means that life-threatening conditions are seen first, regardless of when the patient arrived. Hospital director Kostas Dandoulakis announced the change as a significant improvement to emergency care. For tourists visiting Crete, this means that if you need urgent medical attention, the seriousness of your condition will determine how quickly you are seen. Minor issues may require a longer wait if more critical cases are present. Venizeleio Hospital is located in Heraklion and is the main public hospital serving the island.
