Peak Saharan Dust Storm Brings Haze to Crete Today

Wednesday, 15 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A wave of African dust is currently passing over Crete, bringing reduced visibility, muddy rain, and above-average temperatures. Meteorologists at meteo.gr indicate that today marks the peak of the event, with conditions expected to be at their most intense. The dust originates from the Sahara and is carried north by southerly winds, a seasonal phenomenon common in spring and early summer. Visitors should expect a hazy sky and a yellowish tint to the air. Cars and outdoor surfaces may be coated with fine red-brown sediment after any rainfall. Those with respiratory conditions or allergies are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure and carry any necessary medication. Keep windows closed when possible. Conditions are forecast to improve as the dust cloud moves through the region.
