Heraklion Grassfire Spreads as Firefighters Battle Blaze

Wednesday, 22 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A grass and scrubland fire broke out in the Heraklion area of Crete, prompting an immediate response from local fire services. Three fire trucks and six firefighters were dispatched to the scene to bring the blaze under control. Grass fires are common in Crete, particularly during dry and windy conditions, and can spread quickly in rural and semi-rural areas. Visitors hiking or driving through countryside near Heraklion should stay alert to any smoke or road closures in the area, as emergency vehicles may be operating nearby. If you are in or around Heraklion and notice signs of fire or smoke, move away from the affected area and follow instructions from local authorities. Avoid lighting fires or discarding cigarettes outdoors, as fire risk across the island remains a serious concern throughout the warmer months.
