Cretan PDO Cheeses Shine at European AREPO Event in Brussels

Saturday, 2 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The Region of Crete showcased its local PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) products at the 6th European AREPO Event in Brussels, where Cretan cheeses proved especially popular with attendees. PDO status is an EU certification guaranteeing that a product is made in a specific region using traditional methods, and Crete holds several such designations, including graviera, anthotyros, and mizithra cheeses. For visitors to Crete, this international recognition is a good reminder to seek out these certified local cheeses at markets, delis, and traditional tavernas across the island. Look for the red-and-yellow PDO label when shopping. Heraklion's central market, Chania's covered market hall, and roadside farm shops in rural areas are reliable places to find authentic Cretan dairy products directly from local producers.
