Hantavirus Cases Confirmed on Cruise; Greece Says Situation Under Control

Monday, 11 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greek health authorities have confirmed they are fully prepared to handle hantavirus cases following an incident involving a cruise ship. A 75-year-old passenger who was aboard a vessel with confirmed hantavirus cases is currently in quarantine and cooperating fully with health officials. Health Minister Georgiadis stated that protocols are in place and the situation is under control. Hantavirus is not transmitted between people and cannot be caught from other passengers or tourists. It is typically spread through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, usually in rural or forested areas. The risk to tourists visiting standard destinations, hotels, and beaches in Crete is very low. Visitors should avoid contact with wild rodents, do not handle dead animals, and wash hands thoroughly after spending time in rural areas. If you develop fever or respiratory symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
