Broken Lift Bars Disabled Visitors From Crete's Historic Koules

Saturday, 16 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The Koules Venetian fortress in Heraklion, one of Crete's most visited historical landmarks, remains inaccessible to visitors with mobility impairments due to a lift that has been out of service for several years. Disability rights activist Georgia Ximeraki has publicly raised the issue in 2026, highlighting the gap between the site's status as a major cultural attraction and its failure to meet basic accessibility standards. The fortress, which dates to the 16th century and sits at the entrance of Heraklion's old harbor, draws large numbers of tourists each season. Visitors with wheelchairs, limited mobility, or other physical disabilities should be aware that accessible entry is currently not available. No official timeline for repair has been announced. Those planning a visit are advised to contact the site in advance to confirm current conditions.
