Traffic Lights Installed on BOAK to End Crete Highway Delays

Monday, 4 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Traffic lights are being installed on the BOAK, Crete's main east-west highway, following repeated traffic disruptions that caused significant delays for drivers. The new signal system will regulate vehicle flow at a specific junction along the national road, replacing what had been an uncontrolled and problematic crossing point. The BOAK is the primary route connecting Heraklion with eastern Crete, including popular destinations such as Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia. Tourists driving between central and eastern Crete should be aware that temporary traffic controls may be in place during installation works. Once complete, the signals are expected to improve safety and reduce congestion at the affected section. Visitors renting a car are advised to allow extra travel time when using this route until works are finished.
