Back to newsGreek industrial company METLEN reported revenues exceeding 2 billion euros in the first quarter of 2026, a 37% increase compared to the same period last year. Of particular interest to visitors planning travel around Crete, METLEN is a participating stakeholder in the BOAK project, the major east-west highway currently under construction across the island. The BOAK corridor will eventually connect Kissamos in the west to Ierapetra in the east, significantly reducing drive times between Crete's main regions. Construction remains ongoing in 2026, so travelers should expect occasional road disruptions, detours, and delays on certain stretches. Using updated navigation apps before setting out is recommended. Once complete, the highway will make exploring eastern Crete, including the Lasithi plateau and the Gulf of Mirabello, considerably more accessible from Heraklion and the western regions.
