South Crete Beaches Get Pre-Season Overhaul Ahead of Summer

Monday, 11 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Local authorities and Heraklion MP Lefteris Avgenakis have been coordinating with relevant services to ensure the smooth operation of three popular beach destinations on Crete's south coast: Kalamaki, Matala, and Kokkinos Pyrgos. A series of meetings and interventions took place in recent days to address operational issues in these coastal areas ahead of the summer season. Matala is known for its historic cave dwellings and hippie heritage, while Kalamaki and Kokkinos Pyrgos attract visitors with quieter sandy beaches along the Messara Gulf. The coordinated efforts suggest improvements to beach infrastructure and services are underway. Tourists planning to visit these areas this season can expect better-organised facilities. All three beaches are accessible from Heraklion, roughly 70 kilometres to the south via the Messara plain.
