Crete Farm Burn Escalates Into Wildfire, One Hospitalized

Monday, 20 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A fire broke out in the Neochori area of Crete after a person burning crop residue on their agricultural land lost control of the flames. The fire spread to surrounding forest, burning approximately 10 stremmata (around 2.5 acres) of woodland before being brought under control. One person was hospitalized as a result of the incident. Wildfires are a recurring risk in Crete, particularly during dry periods. Open burning of agricultural waste is a common local practice but can escalate quickly in windy or dry conditions. Visitors hiking or traveling through rural and forested areas should remain alert to fire activity and follow any local authority guidance. If you notice smoke or fire, contact emergency services by dialing 199 (fire brigade) or 112 (general emergency). Avoid parking near dry vegetation and never light open fires outside designated areas.
