Heavy Rainfall Triggers Floods in Eastern Crete Coastal Towns

Thursday, 30 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Heavy rainfall in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete recently caused the streams of Kavousi and Pacheia Ammos to overflow, flooding surrounding areas on both sides of the riverbeds. Water levels rose significantly above seasonal norms, producing dramatic scenes captured on video. Both Kavousi and Pacheia Ammos are small coastal communities along the Gulf of Mirabello on the northeastern coast. Tourists travelling the coastal road between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia should check local conditions before driving, as stream overflows in this area can affect road surfaces. If you are hiking in the Kavousi gorge area, postpone until water levels fully recede. Flash flooding in Cretan stream beds can develop quickly during or after heavy rain, so stay away from dry riverbeds when storms are forecast.
