Crete May 1st: Plan Ahead as Shops Close for Greek Public Holiday

Wednesday, 29 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
May 1st, 2026 (Friday) is a mandatory public holiday in Greece, meaning shops and supermarkets across Crete will be closed for the entire day. This applies to most retail stores, including larger supermarkets. If you are visiting Crete around this date, plan ahead by stocking up on food, drinks, and any essentials on Thursday April 30th. Some tourist-facing businesses such as restaurants, cafes, and hotels will remain open as usual. Petrol stations may also operate on reduced hours, so refuel in advance if you are travelling by car. May Day is also traditionally celebrated with outdoor gatherings and flower wreaths, so expect a festive atmosphere in local villages and town squares throughout the island.
