Crete Hospital Staff Shortage Threatens Emergency Services

Sunday, 19 April 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Staff at Agios Nikolaos Hospital, the main public hospital serving the Lasithi region in eastern Crete, have raised formal concerns about a serious shortage of paramedic and orderly staff. Workers warn that the understaffing is affecting the hospital's ability to respond effectively to emergencies and provide adequate patient care. For tourists visiting the eastern part of Crete, including popular destinations such as Elounda, Spinalonga, and Sitia, this is the nearest major public hospital. In case of a medical emergency, response times or care capacity may be affected. Visitors are advised to ensure their travel insurance covers medical evacuation, carry basic first aid supplies, and note that private clinics are available in larger towns as an alternative for non-critical situations.
